Soviet Wrist Watches

September 16, 2009 7 comments

I recently bought two vintage russian, or should I rather say Soviet, wrist watches. They were “New Old Stock” meaning they were unsold, so practically new.

One is a Raketa (Paketa) 24 hour watch 19 jewels. It’s not a normal watch. First things first, it was probably made mid-late 80’s when russia was still CCCP. What’s strange about it then? Well it’s a 24 hour watch. Usually watches are 12 hours, meaning that in 1 day, the hour dial will go round twice. In this case, it goes round once. You can see the difference in the photo! It’s hand wound, and it lasts approximately 36 hours. It also has a rotating bezel that shows cities around the world, so you can tell what time it is there too!

The second is the real deal. It’s a Slava Medical watch. This watch was apparently given to all Soviet doctors. As you can see from the pictures, it has a pulse measuring aid. This one is hand wound too and was made around the same time as the Raketa. I immediately thought of my girlfriend (she is in her 4th year studying medicine) and so I’m going to give it to her as a present. It’s actually a very good watch, with 26 jewels, which is actually a few too many, but hey…

Here they are (I recently changed the wrist bands because they were unglueing):

Wallpaper Weekly

This week’s wallpaper isn’t really a wallpaper.  It has a lot of different images that represent musical band names. There are 74 band names in this image and it’s up to you all to find them!!! Don’t cheat! They go from music to country to metal. So there’s no distinction. How many can you find?

Answers will be posted next week!

Oh and a funny cat too for your pleasure.

Have fun 😀

Antique raid!

September 8, 2009 Leave a comment

This Sunday my girlfriend brought me to the antique market in Aviano. We spent the whole day trying to find something that stood out of the heap.

I found a beautiful LIP pocketwatch from the early 1900’s. The quadrant is pretty basic and quite abused, but the movements are in exceptional order and are a beauty to watch.

I’ve always had a passion for pocketwatches, since I was a small kid. I can now finally express this passion into a hobby and i’ll make sure I try and find other similar bargains. What i’m aimning for at the moment is a nice american pocketwatch. Either a Hamilton or an Illinois. I don’t want to buy them from ebay. I’d love to find a bargain at some antique market or fair.

Lets get back to the LIP I found. I can’t seem to find an exact date for it. The only thing I found out is that it’s marked on the inside backcover with 393. I think this means the diameter is 39mm and that it is given a mark of 3 out of 5 for it’s movement precision which is discrete.

It is of french manufacture, and LIP have been making watches since the 1800’s up to today.

Enough technical talk…

My girlfriend found two beautiful necklaces, and sent me the pic for the one she likes best.

Here are the photos. Oh and btw, these photos made me realise I need a serious camera… the pics, even with the macro setting, are a crock of shite.

This week; it’s nerd time. I’ve gathered some geeky wallpapers round the net. Some are from Star Wars, some videogames including Super Mario, Zelda, Street Fighter 4, a few tv-series including Battlestar Galactica and Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles:

There’s also this really cool song by a band called bedtime for toys that I recently found. Hear it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ch5hvFFRVOw

Why you should Jailbreak Your Iphone

September 3, 2009 4 comments

Right… Since buying an iPhone i’ve been dwelling if I was going to jailbreak or not. I hung in there for a while but a week ago I decided, out of boredom, to jailbreak it and see what the fuss was all about.

After looking for best apps / best cydia apps / best games etc all over the internet, I have decided to make my own list of best programs that give a reason to jailbreak your iphone.

I have a 3G 8gig 3.0 OS Iphone.
First and foremost, the reason I decided to jailbreak:
3G Unrestrictor

This nifty little app makes your iPhone think it’s linked to a wireless network while it really isn’t. Why you ask? Well. For example, stupid apple decided to stop programs like Skype, fring etc, making outgoing calls UNLESS they are under wi-fi connection to the internet. In other words it won’t let you make VOIP calls with data connections with your provider. 3G unrestrictor lets you use your data connection even with VOIP programs, tricking the iphone into thinking it’s connected to Wi-fi.  You can specify which apps you want to unrestrict. It also lets you view youtube videos at full quality instead of the crappy quality it has on default. This is well worth the money it costs on cydia. You can probably find it free somewhere.

SBSettings

Ver nice app, it’s a must for any jailbroken iphone. You touch the top of the iphone horizontally and it shows up with quick settings like enabling and disabling wifi, bluetooth with just one click. It allows little options like displaying Ram usage next to the time and many other things. Won’t go into details as you probably already have it.

Winterboard

Another must. Practically a theme manager. You can find this on Cydia for free.
Reccommended Theme: Glasklart Which is the one I use, and the one in the pic above.

Backgrounder

This program allows you to multi-task your iphone apps. For example you are in a game, and want to check something on internet without exiting the game. You hold the home button for 3 seconds and the game will still run in the background but you’ll be returned to your home and you can open another program. Watch out on your memory usage, especially for 3G and previous iphones. On Cydia for free.

Cycorder

A program that lets you record videos on 3G Iphones and previous versions. Max fps is 15 but it’s still pretty decent. On cydia for free.

Installous

A program that lets you connect through appulo.us to download cracked apps. Nuff said. You may need to add new sources to cydia for this one. A quick google should suffice

Qtweeter

Lets you post status updates to both facebook and tweetter with pics and vids if you want. I love the fact that to activate the app you actually have to “pull” it down from the top of the screen. Very intuitive and fast to access. Free on Cydia.

Last but not least:

Categories

I seem to have a LOT of games (I promise i’ll make a list sooner or later), so they were all crowding up my iphone. Categories lets you create folders on your home screen in which you can pop any app you want. I just have 1 at the moment for games. Another must have app.

Make It Mine

Make it mine, or MIM, changes the cellular provider name into anything you want. may it be Joe’s, Riqz, I<3 Poop, or just simply: Poop.

Right… That’s really all I can think of atm and will add more stuff if it comes to mind.

I think those apps make it easy for someone to decide pro-jailbreaking. There are many other apps that are worth jailbreaking for but too many to list!

Hope I helped someone!

P.S. For some iPhone 1337 geekage, download Veency on your iphone and Realvnc on your pc. Connect your iphone to your home wireless network, then type the iphone’s IP in “server” option on RealVNC. You will then be able to control your iphone directly from your PC. Hehe.

If you need any help, just pop a message and i’ll answer ASAP.

UFC 101 Anderson Silva

August 31, 2009 2 comments

I finally caught up with my missed UFC fight night last week.

Anderson Silva is my absolute favourite fighter ever. He is a master of Muay Thai and also very underestimated with his ground Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

He was criticised in his last two fights because they weren’t spectacular but it wasn’t his fault.

He is so good, that Dana White has decided to make him fight in the upper weight category, against the ex light heavyweight champion of the UFC, Forrest Griffin.

He put an ex champion to shame, making him look like a newbie to the sport. Here’s the video so you can all see that Anderson Silva is indeed, an alien. Or in the matrix.

He is in his own league… Makes one ask himself how far we can push the guy with weird matchups… I hope they never make him fight that fatty Brock Lesnar.

Wallpaper of the Week

August 19, 2009 1 comment

I hate Microshaft Access… And my boss asked me to “meld” two databases together… I skimmed through Access classes in Uni and I never touched it again… Hopefully it’ll all come back to me in due time 😦

Anywayyyyyy it’s time for Wallpapers of the week!!!

This week’s is inspired by a very famous painting. I found this painting and some funny variations of it and I had never saved them… Thing is that i didn’t know the artists name!! It took me a lot of searching but in the end I found out that the Artist’s name is Edward Hopper and the painting is Nighthawks.

These variations were made by fans.

Facts:

– “Nighthawks is a 1942 painting by Edward Hopper that portrays people sitting in a downtown diner late at night. It is considered Hopper’s most famous painting, as well as one of the most recognizable in American art. It is currently in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.”

– The television series That ’70s Show,[20] Dead Like Me,[21]The SimpsonsRocko’s Modern Life,[22]and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation[23] have all placed their own characters in versions of Nighthawks.
